Flaherty, Michael

Born in Cloghane, Dingle Peninsula, in 1950, Michael Flaherty’s artistic journey has spanned five decades, beginning with studies in Maynooth, Cork, and Sligo. Since his return to Kerry in 1989, his work has grown in recognition, celebrated for its energetic brushstrokes, lush colours, and a fiery poetic spirit that reflects the
dramatic landscapes of his home place.

Art critic Aidan Dunne of The Irish Times has likened Flaherty’s bold use of paint and colour to the techniques of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Henry, praising his work for its spontaneous and lyrical quality. His work has featured in many group and solo shows around Ireland, Britain, Europe and the USA. His first exhibition with The Kenny Gallery was in 1990. Flaherty’s art has graced galleries across Ireland, Britain, Europe, and the USA, and is housed in prestigious collections, including Irish Life, ESB, Dublin University, and Commerz Bank of Frankfurt.

A new collection of works was shown at The Kenny Gallery in 2024. The exhibition, Fermoyle Sky, delved into the changing skies and untamed vistas of Fermoyle, evoking a profound connection between nature and viewer.
