Berkery, Shane
Shane Keisuke Berkery was born in Tokyo in 1992 moving with his family to the USA when he was one. Staying in America for seven years, they then went back to Japan where they lived for another 7 years. The family then moved to Ireland where they now reside.
His cultural background has been a major influence on his work and is a frequent theme in his paintings.
Since graduating from the National College of Art and Design (Ireland) Berkery has developed a notable practice, exhibiting his work extensively both nationally and internationally in Sweden, France, Spain, Singapore, the USA, and China. Berkery was awarded the prestigious Hennessy-Craig Award from the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2016 and his work is included in the Irish state collection and has been shown in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in Wisconsin and the National Portrait Gallery in London. Additionally, his work is featured in the publication "More Disruption" by Seed, J. (Schiffer Publishing, 2023). A solo exhibition with Carl Kostyál opened in April 2026.
"I am endlessly fascinated by the ephemeral and inherently subjective nature of memory. We embellish, we forget, and our personal narratives colour the past. I believe this flawed and unstable structure is home to great creative potential, and it is from within this unreliability of experience where I find the most compelling imagery."
